Honda Civic ESi Turbo Charged Boost Up

Honda Civic ESi Turbo Charged Boost up today. Did some fine tuning on the low end side and boost this hot rod to 0.6 bars for low boost and a 0.75 bars on high boost.

This Boost level is not to the very limits of the engine but we're putting the cap on the amount of boost we're making for this ride and very careful to select the right time to boost this ride up to 0.75 bars of boost. Turbo spool is very much better now as the actuator is now tuner controlled and the low end response is also more torque.

When the Vtec kicks in wih the turbo effect, it can cause the car to wheel spin for a second and then sprint forward. Its not those power sucking wheel spin I'm talking about here, but the skill of the driver to switch gears smoothly and quickly such that the boost drop is almost negligible.

While tuning, I tried to simulate what the owner did when he test drove the car but wasnt able to switch gears and control the car fast enough to achieve the same effect. Anyway, skill aside, this ride pulls a very strong 0.75 bars of boost and when the turbo spools, the 'g' force can be felt. haha, that placed a smile on everyone's face of course.

This ride benifits from the racing clutch that was installed and no lost of power when the turbo spools violently.

Once again, a very nice ride to own, nice idling, no stalling and best of all, a fuel consumption of 480 km per tankful.

Verdict :
Very torquey car to drive, excellent high end power from the TD04 Turbo, good fuel consumption. Strong 0.75 bars of boost.

I think this should make the owner proud as I know that he want to prove this car's worth before selling it off. Yes, another crazy about cars guy.... thats right!

Retuned Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo

Retuned Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo

Ok, we retuned the swift after owner removed 1 device which suppose to convert the fly-by-wire to throttle or something la... I thinks its just some transistor which make it on/off only. This device gave us losta of headache during tuning,... so much so that the overall response was affected negatively. I cannot find picture of this throttle enhancer thing on the web, one flat small and black thing that looks like shit, i mean look like those gaming cartridges?

So, after owner DIY removed the device which was hidden somewhere, we retuned the entire map. The improvement was immediately felt. Actually that time slot was suppose to boost up the Honda ESI turbo, Honda owner was kind enough to offer his slot to Swift Sport owner to retune his car. After retune, car was nice and fast. Turbo effect was much better. However, the idling is too low. We decided to drive back to Sam to request to adjust the idling higher.

Ai yoh, after adjustment, the entire map changed again. Ok, this time owner decide to leave the car behind and collect it tomorrow. It was like retuning an entire map all over again. Damn shack. Finally, yes, you guessed it, car was fully tune by 2am. 1 hour earlier than expected. haha

Overall Verdict :
Good. Car is more responsive and the turbo effect can be felt. 'G' is good at around 3k rpm at 0.4 bars of boost. A lot of tweaking here and there to make this turbo kit work and its definately no simple task. Butt feel should give about 170~180 bhp on crank. Smooth idling, no stalling, not like last time when the throttle "enhancer" was installed, car tends to stall once a while and for a day or two. Car is running on emanage blue but, I felt that emanage ultimate is more suitable for this car for better idling and stability. If you have the budget, get the emanage ultimate. No regrets.

side track abit. Honda esi turbo clocked 480km per tankful. Not bad for turbo charged car!! Just completed servicing, new oil, new spark plugs.

Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo Charged

Well, finally after 10 days of waiting, we finally get to tune this Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo Charged. Running on a small turbo and tuned using emanage blue unit.

It comes stock with twin cams, forged pistons, VVT technology and has a 123 bhp at 6800 rpm spec. After putting in the turbo kit, the car is able to sustain the high end power band better via boosting. We give this ride a 0.4 bars of low boost setting and set the car moving. Turbo spools early at 2000 rpm and churns its max boost at 2500 rpm. I personally find this ride hard to control as the amount of torque the stock car has and in addtion, the massive torque from the turbo, equals a huge sharp increase in torque at the very rpm range. You get something very very torquey, a light tap on the throttle and you get the car surging.

When the car reachs the 60km/h range, the turbo spooling effect does improve the overall delivery of power. The pull from 60 kpm onwards is not with the help of the turbo which give the car the extra push it needs since the swift sport's weakness is on the high end side, this turbo sure comes in handy.

Overall verdict is average, as the turbo effect is not as pronounce as other underpowered cars with the kit improving the bhp significantly. I think this kit is more for those who have already maxed out swift sport engine and the driver is looking at squeezing even more from the engine on the mid~high end side which is lacking in this car.

Tuning is also a challange as the compression ratio is 11:1.

Ok, if you already lost to this ride, you'll lose even more this time.... hahaha

tune until 3 am... I think should rename this site to 3am tune blog...

Honda Civic ESI 1.7L Turbo charged

Honda Civic ESI 1.7L Turbo charged

Yes, a new engine. TD04 turbo running in with 0.4 bars of boost! Not that cannot tune the engine past 0.4 bars la... basket, new engine must sayang first then wack wack later right??

At least should clock first servicing la... meantime lun a bit, ok one! 0.4 bar also boost ma

farking tired now, but I think write what i felt should help me sleep better. hahaha

This farked vtec, damn hard to tune, somemore the injectors also use big big one... knn, like lao pek open petrol station like dat... engine also bigger than people's one... I think lam pah not only got hair, also bigger than others liao...

Tune finish, already 3am... lucky got some friendly people doing century there... still can tok cock abit before go home sleep... hahaha... they somemore know sam one... and got let him fix this fix that type... ok... the car tune already accelerate damn fast...

I think mainly because it is very light and the throttle response is super good. I tuning that time drive like pussy...maybe... coz, the owner like drive aeroplane type... knn every gear also can wheel spin type... ai ya, no skill too bad, anyway, tuner only...no need to race. hahaha just make the car fast can liao.

worst thing is afte r I drive my sti, i felt my car like elephant, almost stalled my engine, very lao hong man. Ai ya, got money I buy one crx and lup turbo,... i think also good idea...

At the end of the tuning, I sms owner, surprise to see he not sleeping yet... must be surfing porn la.. havent pak finish?

Ok, the results of this 1.7L ESI Turbo Vtec is very good. Throttle response is very very good. Can drink fuel very fast. Which make the car easy to feel the 'g' when picking up. Low end torque still retains the base civic response! When Turbo kick in, the very big injectors and subs all spray like civil defense like dat... lucky enough to feed the monster... hahaha FC should be around 10~11 like that... not sure yet... will update on this later.

Verdict :

Not for the average joe. Need big lam pah and willing to spend effort to build up the engine and kit. Very satifying... better than sex.

Subaru TS 1.6 Turbo with Blitz Spec-s

If I should, this 1.6 engine has been squeezed to the very limits. Boosting at 0.85 bars, Garret TD04 Turbo, almost new forester intercooler, 17" rims, custom turbo inlet, custom exhaust, hks muffler, and Greddy Emanage blue unit with tuning. Not that the list stops here, those listed are what most people will have... there are more toys pack into this ride like Defi meters, STI Opitron gauges, SARD Fuel reg, WRX Pumps, WRX seats, WRX fuel pump, WRX 4 pot 2 brakes, short shifter, wrx pedals (full set), varis carbon fibre boonet, knn open pod filter... ai yoh still have la..... all these and more in less than 1 year !! Yes. I think he is loaded too :) hahaha

This turbo conversion setup is carefully crafted along the way to select a very good all-round performance with a minimal impact to fuel economy during normal driving. Good low end torque is beefed up by his customized exhaust system and long TS extractors design, the boxer sound is low and bubbly and definately music to many subaru fan's ears.

Blitz SBC Spec-s Boost Controller

Turbo Boost is controlled by Blitz SBC Spec S boost controller at 0.85 bars of boost. This ride is currently running on stock TS injectors which are unable to hold that amount of boost without the engine complaining. However, the driver is good at controlling the vehicle's rpm and boost pretty well and we decided to leave the settings as is. Unlike race junkies, owner goes on-boost occasionally and remains calm and polite to other road users. Very sane driving 99.9% of the time. I contributed to the 1% of the time when I tuned his ride hahaha...

Larger injectors have problems of their own like stalling, rougher idling and higher fuel consumption. This ride currently enjoys an FC of 12km/L ! Something most turbo charged cars can only dream of. This ride also retains the factory idling quality and have zero problems on cold-starts and high IATs.

Very very soon, we will be putting in the wrx injectors which is a direct bolt-on to the subaru's 1.6 engine. With this new injectors installed, we can now safely boost that 0.85 bars without much skills involved. We will then trade in the idle quality and the stock anti-stalling features and start squeezing this TS engine to the very limits.

You have heard of some second hand turbo kits floating around in very good condition and this is definately one of them. Direct bolt-on to stock TS, plug and play type. Maybe thats why kept modding other things?

I wonder whats next? hahaha... wrx engine? ... who know.... hahaha Have also wont let me post la... hahaha...

Proton Wira Turbo Charged

Proton Wira Turbo Charged

Yes! Its a proton wira with a TD04 Turbo installed and fully tuned with Greddy emanage Blue Unit.

My initial feelings of this car is that the engine may not be able to withstand the on-slaught of forced induction. During test drives however, I noticed that the enigne response is very different and decided to probe further into the engine's setup. I discovered that the engine internals have been modified. Ha ha ha.
First off, Greddy emanage does not officially support Proton in its list of manufacturer and finding one configuration that allows us to run the engine smoothly without complication is the hardest part. The complete turbo setup for this car is very well done churning a stable 0.4 bars of boost all the way to 7000 rpm. Torque is fully packed at the 3500 region where the car produces a full 0.4 bars of boost at any gear. This causes the stock proton's clutch to slip under that massive amount of torque as compared to stock.

When the tuning has completed at 11:30pm that evening, owner was still around and decided to go to a test drive of the final product. At the first traffic light junction, we have the TIBS taxi beside us and I noticed the owner floored the accelerator to 100% during move off... In my mind, I was thinking that if we didnt win this taxi, we're gonna be screwed...

I could hear the desiel engine revving away and ourselves simply pulled past the cab and continued pulling till the next traffic. Not bad for a start. hahaha

I told the owner... "lucky we win man... if not jia lat!" hahaha... both of us laughing our ass off...

A happy proton wira owner, hand shaking here and there... a few tips on how to race that turbo... we're done for the day... When he do up his clutch to hyper single... we're gonna dyno it at sam's expense... hahaha. Cool!

Remember.... its a proton. Yes, for those who know me... Yes, I tuned a proton!!

Subaru TS 2.5L Engine

Subaru TS 2.5L Engine stage 2

Like the old saying, there is no replacement for displacement. Subaru is spoilt by choices and here's one which is has a 2.5L powerplant. Running on emanage blue unit. I'll write one on a 1.6 Turbo charged TS soon :) After he put in the wrx injectors and go for tuning.
If you're looking for a very packed low end, try this setup. A simple dropping in of a block without any other major mods produces 130~140 bhp on wheels for this ride. Extremely value for money I must say. This ride depends heavily on a good tune to prevent the engine from pinging during normal driving. As the intake manifold for this ride is still a 1.6 manifold, and with a crappy intake piping, the mid range is quite affected negatively. Intake system of any car is extremely important and when it reaches the later stages of modification, the quality of the intake will be more pronounced. Good or bad more obvious.
Before tuning this ride, the 3000~4000 rpm during normal driving is pinging away. And there is abosolutely no way to accelerate without hearing the engine knocking sound every time you try to overtake that taxi to get to the next ECP exit. To make matters worse, this is a Automatic transmission car and each time the gear shifts, the knocking takes place. Just imagine driving around during chinese new year sounding like a tractor!
Ok, I fixed those pinging problems. The FC is quite lousy at 7.5 km/L. Mainly due to crappy intakes, restrictive 1.6 intake manifold and his automatic transmission's torque convertor. Owner decided against the 2.5L (bigger) intake manifold as it makes his ride looks modified and he wish to remain discrete about it. Hiaz...
Owner is also very careful as he test drove his car for 2 months before paying up his tuning fees. For a moment I thought I won't be paid my dues but received a call yesterday that the payment was made to the workshop and I can collect it anytime, I like... cool! He kept his word, what was I thinking about these 2 months... hahaha...So, proven, no relearn, tuning is consistent!Anyway, my word to him is that if I didnt fix the problem, I will not take a cent from him. And his fears of the ECU relearning, I gave him my word that I am able to prevent it from relearning... Maybe that explains the 2 months of waiting? Dunno la,... ai yoh. Maybe because I am the second tuner he has consulted? the first one sound more convincing than me? hahaha...
Verdict:
OK, overall this 2.5L lower block Subaru TS packs a head slamming low end torque which no other setup can match. It has the punching effect when you take off from the traffic light. If this car uses racing clutch, lauching a AWD TS is easily done with gusto. Downside, FC is bad esp. when its on an Auto car and the high end lacks the luster of a turbo charged car. Owner is happy as it makes his day-to-day drive easier. Of course la, 2.5L mah!! Hopefully he mod up his intake manifold, its gonna be wild!

Toyota Vios NA Stage 2 with Emanage Blue

Toyota Vios VVT-i Engine

After tuning turbo charged vehicles for some time, seeing a NA Toyota Vios coming in for tuning after completing his stage 1 setup is something refreshing. Initial test drives shows the car is running rough at 4k till redline and overall response is lousy. Simply, no response. You step sharply on the accelerator and it takes like half a second or so for the car to wake up and respond. You can't rev freely from idle, so, how to signal the arsehole beside you without him laughing away man... hahaha You step on throttle, the car shakes a little then vroom... ai yoh...

Simple mods like HKS SPF open pod filter, denso iridium spraky, custom 304 stainless steel intake piping, decat, and special type straight through muffler + emanage blue tuning.

Results? Better throttle response, you step and it goes type... hahaha... you can vroom vrroom the taxi beside you... high end is butter smooth.

Sam test drove it and smile, owner test drove it and came back looking a little shaken... hmm... maybe not used to the increase bhp ?? Ask him hows the car, the nod his head and say good... good... hmm...

basically Vios comes stock with vvti technology which can be tied with some modification which bring the best out of the vvti response and fuel economy settings. Overall this is a good setup which probably increases 10~20% bhp on stock. + a few tricks on how to race with vvti, you'll be statisfied.

At least for now ... see when he go for turbo ...
