Honda Integra GSR

Honda Integra GSR

The integra GSR is basically a 2L 16v 160 bhp car with a 5 speed automatic transmission gearbox. Car arrives stock, nothing done yet. We decat the exhaust, and modified the intake slightly for better flow when the Vtec kicks in. First impression was the very torquey feeling when you tap on the accelerator. But this in fact posed a problem when we started tuning this car.

On this K20 engine, you have the i-Vtec technology which in my opinion is not suitable for our singapore stop and go traffic. The i-Vtec is electronically controlling the vtec to kick in as early as 3000 rpm and depending on the driving conditions, the ecu will then switch it on or off accordingly. Owner complains about the super high fuel consumption even when he is not driving aggressively. I felt that as a 2L car with a light integra chasiss she should be able to keep up with our traffic conditions with ease even without the vtec kicking in and stuff. Otherwise look like siao ding dong smashing around like dat...

When vtec kicks in, the amount of fuel required to run the car increases dramatically, resulting in the increase in fuel consumption. I felt that high FC is acceptable if we're wacking the car hard but during normal day-to-day drive, clocking high FC of 8km/L is not-acceptable.

Stock car comes out of the factory with a safe tuning which applies to their factory integras in general. However, when modifications are done to the car, it now releases new potential and in tuning, we can realise this potential and build a custom mapping for the car accordingly. Based on my experiences, even when 2 cars with the exact modification can yield 2 different results. No one-car is exactly the same as the other.

During tuning, we set the vtec to kick in during hard driving and during normal driving and cruising, we tuned the car to be easy on the petrol, smoother pickup. This will yield a much better FC and also retains the Honda's vtec response and punch. i-Vtec should be artificial intellengence i think, in hokkien, it means geh kiang... act smart la...

About fuel octance level, we tuned this car on Ron 95 fuel and tuned it agressively. This allows the owner to have the option to choose whether to play or not. If wanna play, pump 98 ron and wack all the way. If don't play, then pump 95 and wack conservatively. Of course, if ROn 98 is the defacto fuel for the owner, then we can yield much more horse power. Stock wise, 95 or 98 makes no difference.

Owner joins us for the tuning session. He commented that the car already feels much faster after we finished tuning (with Sam, me and owner on board!). With a better tuned Vtec setting and mapping customized to his car, its a real fun car to own and drive around. This car is extremely sensitive to weight. Like all hondas :) Once done, the first thing the owner did when he left the building is to open his vtec heehee hee... For obvious reasons.

Car costs 93K with coe... if I got the S-11, I'll buy one and go track. Handling is supereb !!

This car is tuned with very basic LTA compliant modification and tuned using greddy emanage Blue engine management system. Emanage blue is capable of producing fantastic results, however, emanage Ultimate has addition function build in which allows the tuner to do more wonders.

Verdict:
Excellent response. Improved fuel economy. Handling is easy.

On the other hand, the engine can do better with a turbo charger. Try Jun cams... :)
Stock factory maps not suitable for our road la...
