Subaru TS 1.6 Turbo with Blitz Spec-s

If I should, this 1.6 engine has been squeezed to the very limits. Boosting at 0.85 bars, Garret TD04 Turbo, almost new forester intercooler, 17" rims, custom turbo inlet, custom exhaust, hks muffler, and Greddy Emanage blue unit with tuning. Not that the list stops here, those listed are what most people will have... there are more toys pack into this ride like Defi meters, STI Opitron gauges, SARD Fuel reg, WRX Pumps, WRX seats, WRX fuel pump, WRX 4 pot 2 brakes, short shifter, wrx pedals (full set), varis carbon fibre boonet, knn open pod filter... ai yoh still have la..... all these and more in less than 1 year !! Yes. I think he is loaded too :) hahaha

This turbo conversion setup is carefully crafted along the way to select a very good all-round performance with a minimal impact to fuel economy during normal driving. Good low end torque is beefed up by his customized exhaust system and long TS extractors design, the boxer sound is low and bubbly and definately music to many subaru fan's ears.

Blitz SBC Spec-s Boost Controller

Turbo Boost is controlled by Blitz SBC Spec S boost controller at 0.85 bars of boost. This ride is currently running on stock TS injectors which are unable to hold that amount of boost without the engine complaining. However, the driver is good at controlling the vehicle's rpm and boost pretty well and we decided to leave the settings as is. Unlike race junkies, owner goes on-boost occasionally and remains calm and polite to other road users. Very sane driving 99.9% of the time. I contributed to the 1% of the time when I tuned his ride hahaha...

Larger injectors have problems of their own like stalling, rougher idling and higher fuel consumption. This ride currently enjoys an FC of 12km/L ! Something most turbo charged cars can only dream of. This ride also retains the factory idling quality and have zero problems on cold-starts and high IATs.

Very very soon, we will be putting in the wrx injectors which is a direct bolt-on to the subaru's 1.6 engine. With this new injectors installed, we can now safely boost that 0.85 bars without much skills involved. We will then trade in the idle quality and the stock anti-stalling features and start squeezing this TS engine to the very limits.

You have heard of some second hand turbo kits floating around in very good condition and this is definately one of them. Direct bolt-on to stock TS, plug and play type. Maybe thats why kept modding other things?

I wonder whats next? hahaha... wrx engine? ... who know.... hahaha Have also wont let me post la... hahaha...

Yesterday, after the wrx injectors were in, the overall bhp and torque for this ride increased. The inital target was to check if the car can withstand that amount of increase safely since the previous 0.8 bars of boost and the current 0.8 will be 2 different type of power altogether. The torque generated will definately increase,... by how much? Not sure, must test drive to tell...

In fact, the torque increase was so much till the stock TS clutch started to give way. The upgraded exhaust system also contributed to the high amount of torque produced, so much that in every gear when the turbo started to spool, you can see the clutch slips away, even during light boosting, the tendency to slip is also there.

So good was the upgrade that all those slippages happen around 0.5 bars of boost. Intermittently at 0.4 bars of boost. The option now is to go for an upgraded clutch to hold the increase torque and bhp from this new upgrade.

I was posed the question of boost cut and the consequences of ecu boost cutting if not handled properly. And I think its taboo too to talk about engine blowing and stuff like that during tuning. Maybe just the essentials on clutch and radiator things and nothing more... Halfway through tuning, the engine stalled while driving and the first thing that came to my mind was engine blown! "Fark! Engine blown!!"

so, happily parked the car at road side and called for workshop's support. Discussed the possibility of dropping a wrx engine or something while waiting for the workshop guys to arrive. I couldnt pin point what went wrong and when the tech guys arrived, troubleshooted the engine and confirmed the engine is fine. Hmm... what went wrong was the spark plugs was fouled. And one of the plugs had opted for an early retirement.

Spark plugs used were iridium plugs and what I think went wrong was the sparky may have been fouled after the injectors were installed and tuning wasnt done initially and allowed to run too rich for too long. Then during tuning, the clutch slippage which caused the over correction of fuel during the slippages may have fouled the plugs further.

We went over to Sam's place and he was amazed. Simply because at such low boost, with the enlarged injectors, the torque produced is huge enough to make the clutch slip. I think he was joking when he spoke of recalling all the TS back for retuning... hahaha... You see, not many people will go this far with a custom turbo kit. Many just gave up half way or decide to buy another ride to save the trouble. Well, in this clutch slipping case, I most likely have to reduce the dependency on high boost to produce the bhp but, to use a lower boost setting and have it early enough for that massive torque to be produced. Yes, this time more 'g' force... Yup, 'g' on a TS... not dreaming la... livin it!
